A senior at a Catholic high school in Sacramento renames herself Lady Bird and wages a year-long campaign to escape to a college on the East Coast where culture supposedly happens. Greta Gerwig’s solo directorial debut is structured as a string of small set pieces — a fight in a moving car, a prom-night decision, a thrift-store dress — and saves its most devastating beats for the mother-daughter relationship at its center.
